Septic System Components To Have Inspected And Serviced When You Buy A Home

Sometimes, buying an existing home means that there are many mechanical systems that need to be inspected. One of the components of existing homes that gets overlooked is the septic system, which treats waste water from plumbing. When you buy a new home, you want to inspect the tank, drainage system and other components of your system. Here are a few tips to have your septic system inspected and serviced:

1. The Volume of the Septic Tank

The septic tank is the component of the system that contains all the waste. In the tank, bacteria breaks down solids and separates the fluid effluent to go to the drain field. It is important that the tank is pumped regularly to remove solids, which you may want to have done before you move into a home. When you have, the tank pumped, it is also a good time to inspect the tank for problems like leaks that are common with old concrete materials. If your tank is concrete, you may want to upgrade it by having it retrofitted with a liner that prevents leaks.

2. Distribution Boxes

The liquid waste that comes from tanks is called effluent, which is drained to a series of drain tile pipes that allow it to filter through the ground. A distribution box ensures that the effluent is evenly distributed to these pipes. Sometimes, solid waste may get into a distribution box, clogging it and causing the drain field to become blocked.

3. Drain Field Systems

Drain field systems are susceptible to problems such as solid waste getting into drain tiles, collapsing or over saturated soils. When the drain tiles become clogged, drain cleaning or sewer jetting techniques may be used to repair the lines. If the lines have collapsed due to outdated materials and design, then the septic system will need a new drain field. Another reason that you may need to replace a drain field is when soils have become over saturated with effluent waste and no longer filter the waste efficiently.

Inspecting the septic system of your home before you move in can save you from plumbing problems and costly septic tank repairs. Contact a drain cleaning service such as Roto-Rooter Sewer & Drain Service to help with inspecting septic lines and maintenance tasks that need to be done before you move in.
