Troubleshooting 3 Common Tankless Water Heater Problems

Replacing your traditional water heater with a tankless option can be a great way to enjoy access to on-demand hot water throughout your home. Meanwhile, tankless water heaters take up very little space and can free up valuable square footage in your home. As with any type of plumbing appliance, however, tankless water heaters require maintenance and repairs over time. By knowing the causes of some common tankless water heater issues, you'll know when it's time to call a plumber for a repair.

There's No Hot Water

If your tankless water heater isn't putting out any hot water at all, there are a few things you should check before calling a plumber. Begin by looking at the power or fuel source. If you have an electric water heater, check to be sure that the breaker connected to the water heater hasn't tripped. If it has, try resetting it and see if that resolves the issue. If you have a gas tankless water heater, make sure the gas supply is turned on. If you're still not getting any hot water, it's probably time to call a plumber to do a little further troubleshooting.

There's Not Enough Hot Water

If you still seem to be running out of hot water in your household even after installing a tankless heater, there's a chance your water heater was under-sized for your household. Try using less water simultaneously to see if that resolves the issue; if so, you may need to make some changes to your household water usage or contact your installer to see about upgrading to a water heater with a greater capacity.

The Water Has a Strange Color or Smell

If you live in an area with a hard water supply, there's a good chance you could end up with mineral deposits in your water that cause an unpleasant odor or even slight discoloration. Sometimes, having your water heater flushed by a plumber can resolve the issue (and you should be doing this at least once a year for preventative maintenance, anyway). If that doesn't do the trick, you might want to have a water softener installed in your home, which will remove mineral deposits from your water supply.

These are just a few of the most common issues homeowners sometimes run into with tankless water heaters. The good news is that most of these problems can be easily resolved either on your own or with help from a professional plumber. Contact a plumber who provides tankless water heater repair services to learn more.
