A Guide To Basic Dishwasher Maintenance

Your dishwasher is one of those modern conveniences that you likely don't want to do without. Over time, though, it may seem like the dishes aren't coming out as clean as they used to. Some general maintenance of the dishwasher can solve the problem.

Drain Cleaning

Poor draining is a major cause of less than clean dishware. If the residue from the dishwasher doesn't drain promptly, it can sometimes recirculate during the rinse cycle and leave debris on your dishes. There is a filter in the floor of the dishwasher, which you can access by removing the bottom rack. Simply pull out this filter and rinse it thoroughly. Then, check that there is no debris lodged around the drain before replacing the filter. The dishwasher will usually drain much more effectively afterward.

Spray Arm Clogs

Food debris along with hard water sedimentation can clog the openings in the spray arms inside your dishwasher. When this happens, water won't spray out properly and the dishes won't come out as clean as they should. A paperclip is the best tool to solve the issue. Use the clip to poke out any debris that is stuck inside the openings on both the top and bottom spray arm. If the issue is hard water sedimentation that won't budge with the clip, then you need to soften it. Fill a plastic bag with household vinegar and slide it over the spray arm, securing it in place with a rubber band. Wait at least 15 minutes so that the vinegar can soften the mineralization, then use the paperclip to clear the openings.

Gaskets and Seals

Mold, debris, and dirt along the door gaskets and seals can prevent the dishwasher from closing effectively, which can then cause water leaks. At least once a week, wipe down the gaskets thoroughly with a vinegar-soaked cleaning rag. Make sure to get into the folds of the gaskets to ensure there is no trapped debris. This is also a good time to inspect the gaskets. Plan to have them replaced if they are warped, damaged, or no longer strongly affixed to the door.

Hard Water Buildup

Hard water buildup in the dishwasher can look bad and also affect the function of the dishwasher. If you have hard water, be proactive in avoiding buildup. Fill a bowl with household vinegar and place it on the top rack of the empty dishwasher, then run the dishwasher for a normal cycle. This should remove any developing hard water residue. If there is already extensive buildup, you may need to repeat the process a few times.
